Sunscreen and other lotions leave a residue that builds up in the small details of a piece, particularly filigree work and gemstone settings, dulling their shine faster than normal wear would. None of this means you should avoid wearing your jewellery on holiday. It just means a few simple habits go a long way.
Everyday Care Habits
Put jewellery on last, take it off first. Apply sunscreen, perfume, and hairspray before putting your jewellery on, not after. These products are some of the biggest contributors to a dulled finish, especially on rings and bracelets that sit close to the skin.
Remove jewellery before swimming. Whether it is the ocean, a pool, or a hot spring, saltwater and chlorinated water are both hard on metal and can affect certain gemstones. It is worth getting into the habit of taking rings and bracelets off before you swim, even for a quick dip.
